"humbug!" soeben von seiner amerika-tour zurückgekehrt, jagt für den 31-jährigen autoren charles dickens leider ein literarischer flop den nächsten. obwohl er bereits beachtliche erfolge für sich verbuchen konnte, möchte sich der nächste „große wurf“ so recht nicht einstellen. außerdem drückt der schuh auch finanziell, da man sich das leben eines britischen gentlemans mit großer familie erst einmal leisten können muss. schließlich fühlt sich charles dickens zu einer neuen story inspiriert, doch außer dem namen „eine weihnachtsgeschichte“ und ein paar vager ideen ist er noch etwas ratlos. da erhält er hilfe ausgerechnet von seiner hauptfigur, dem hartherzigen ebenezer scrooge, die sich plötzlich in seinem arbeitszimmer materialisiert…
