vor der epischen kulisse frankreichs in einer zeit bürgerlicher unruhen erzählt les misérables die geschichte von jean valjean, einem ehemaligen sträfling, dem es nicht gelingt, den schatten seiner vergangenheit zu entkommen. seine zukunft wird durch seine nemesis in gestalt des boshaften polizisten und ehemaligen gefängniswärters javert bedroht, der fest entschlossen ist, jean valjean seiner gerechten strafe zuzuführen. unterdessen wird fantine – eine frau aus der arbeiterklasse, die von ihrem reichen geliebten verlassen wurde – zu immer auswegloseren schritten gezwungen, um ihre kleine tochter versorgen zu können. die wege der beiden kreuzen sich, und während sich auf den straßen von paris revolutionäre gewalt entzündet, beginnt jean valjean eine epische reise in richtung selbstakzeptanz, erlösung und liebe.
