getrieben von dem gedanken, dass der gewalttätige großvater für den mysteriösen tod seiner schwester verantwortlich ist, kehrt der irak-veteran gabriel (26) in sein bescheidenes zuhause im ländlichen new mexico zurück. aus dem drang heraus, seine familie zu beschützen, beschließt er, seinen großvater zu töten. doch am tag der abrechnung wird sein plan durchkreuzt. er ist gezwungen, einen ganzen tag mit seinem großvater zu verbringen. in tiefführenden gesprächen finden sie heraus, dass sie beide ähnliche traumatische kriegserlebnisse verbinden. je mehr die vater-sohn-ähnliche beziehung der beiden wieder aufzuleben scheint, desto schwieriger wird es für gabriel, seinen plan in die tat umzusetzen.
