im wald entdeckt der 10-jährige jojo (rick lens) ein zerzaustes, schwarzes vogelküken und päppelt es heimlich bei sich zu hause auf. er gibt ihm den namen jack. tagsüber ist jojo allein und hat genug zeit, sich um jack zu kümmern. die beiden werden schon bald unzertrennliche freunde. er spielt dem vogel countrylieder vor, gesungen von seiner mutter, an die nur fotos und tourplakate im haus erinnern. allerdings muss er aufpassen, dass sein unberechenbarer vater die dohle nicht entdeckt: dieser ist viel strenger, seit jojos mutter weg ist, und würde keine tiere im haus dulden. dafür teilt seine hübsche freundin yenthe, die riesige kaugummiblasen machen kann, die begeisterung für jack und schließt ihn sofort ins herz. in der aufzucht des kleinen vogels, der noch schutz-loser ist als er selbst, empfindet jojo glück und verantwortung.
