schauen uns die nachbarn in die wohnung, lassen wir fix die jalousien herunter. im world wide web geben wir dagegen alles von uns preis. big data – das ist mehr als name, geburtsdatum und wohnort. in der digitalen gesellschaft werden wir zu gläsernen menschen: mit jedem klick, mit jedem telefonat, mit jedem im internet bestellten buch, jeder kartenzahlung oder videoload werden menschen transparent und hinterlassen überall digitale fingerabdrücke. spätestens seit edward snowdens enthüllungen ist klar, dass sich die welt im datenrausch befindet und die persönlichsten informationen von uns allen zur ressource geworden sind: daten sind das öl des 21. jahrhunderts – wer sie hat, hat das geld und damit die macht! doch wer kontrolliert diesen zugriff auf private daten? und was bedeutet das für die gesellschaft? regisseur david bernet öffnet die türen zu einer schier undurchdringlichen welt. zum ersten mal in der geschichte der eu konnte ein filmteam so tief ins innere der eu vordringen und die entstehung eines gesetzes filmisch begleiten. bernet begleitet unter anderem in brüssel, im herzen der eu, die konservative eu-kommissarin viviane reding und den jungen, ambitionierten grünen-abgeordneten jan philipp albrecht (mdep) bei ihrem kampf um ein europäisches datenschutzgesetz - ein gesetz, das jede form von datentransfer schützen soll. lobbyisten, wirtschaftsjuristen und aktivisten treten auf den plan und versuchen einfluss zu nehmen. ein ringen wie bei david gegen goliath beginnt: bürgerrechte versus wirtschaftsinteressen. gibt es schon eine finale entscheidung? weit gefehlt. aktuell laufen die harten und zähen verhandlungen zwischen kommission, dem rat der europäischen regierungen und dem europäischen parlament – während dem sogenannten trilog - auf hochtouren. es geht dabei längst nicht mehr nur um big data. es geht um die zukunft jedes einzelnen eu-bürgers, um seine privatsphäre und sicherheit. die heiße phase hat begonnen.
