die neuen folgen spielen einige monate nach dem staffelfinale und knüpfen thematisch an die geschehnisse an. die existenz der synths ist für die menschen schon lange keine neuheit mehr, dennoch müssen die roboter um ihren platz in der welt kämpfen und sorgen nach wie vor für aufregung. synth niska (emily berrington) ist weiterhin auf der flucht, sie hält sich in berlin auf. bei sich trägt sie das geheimnis um das bewusstsein der synths in form eines codes. was hat sie damit vor? gleichzeitig taucht eine mysteriöse organisation auf, die droht, schindluder mit dem neu gewonnenen wissen um das bewusstsein der synths zu treiben.
derweil steht familie hawkins vor großen herausforderungen und zusätzlich setzen laura (katherine parkinson) und joe (tom goodman-hill) alles daran, ihre ehe zu retten. hierfür suchen sie eine eheberatung auf – ausgerechnet ein synth soll ihnen helfen, ihre probleme zu bewältigen. außerdem muss joe damit klarkommen, dass er bei der arbeit durch einen synth ersetzt wurde.
und auch die anderen haben mit ihren eigenen problemen und der existenz der synths zu kämpfen: so genießen karen und pete eigentlich ihr leben als paar, müssen aber feststellen, dass eine neue synthy-spezies schon bald für aufregung sorgen wird…
