das leben der elfjährigen mia (daniah de villiers) gerät aus den fugen, als ihre familie sich dazu entschließt, in südafrika eine löwenzuchtfarm zu übernehmen. mia kann sich nicht eingewöhnen, zu groß ist die sehnsucht nach ihrer heimat london und ihren alten freunden. eines tages überrascht ihr vater john (langley kirkwood) die familie mit einem seltenen weißen löwenbaby, das auf der farm geboren wurde: charlie. nachdem mia sich anfänglich sträubt, erobert charlie schließlich ihr herz. in den kommenden jahren sind die beiden unzertrennlich, doch charlie ist zu einer prächtigen großen raubkatze herangewachsen. als mia wind davon bekommt, dass ihr vater ihren geliebten charlie verkaufen möchte, beschließt sie mit ihm zu fliehen, um ihn in ein schutzreservat zu bringen. ein großes abenteuer durch die weiten südafrikas beginnt, das das teenagermädchen immer wieder an seine grenzen bringt. aber für charlie ist sie bereit, alles zu riskieren…
