für oscar®-gewinnerin halle berry geht es in diesem sci-fi-thriller von produzent steven spielberg um die frage, was es bedeutet, mensch zu sein. nach dem verlust ihres ehemanns und des humanoiden roboter-sohns ethan findet sich die astronautin molly woods in einer psychiatrischen klinik wieder. molly gelingt die flucht aus der anstalt: sie glaubt an eine verschwörung, die sie mundtot machen soll, was ihr wissen über aliens betrifft. aber dann holt eine mysteriöse krankheit sie ein, die ihrer meinung nach mit ihrer weltraumbegegnung und der anschließenden schwangerschaft zu tun haben muss. von ihren freunden verraten, sucht sie hilfe bei fremden, zu denen auch der ehemalige officer jd richter (jeffrey dean morgan) zählt, mit dem es ihr gelingt, ethan und ihren sohn adhu, einen hybrid-alien-sohn, der bereits weitere exemplare seiner art geschaffen hat, ausfindig zu machen. da die regierung befürchtet, die hybriden würden die menschheit auslöschen, entsendet sie humanoide roboter-soldaten gegen sie. die roboter aber haben eigene pläne. auf welcher seite wollen wir menschen stehen, wenn wir gegen aliens und roboter antreten müssen? das ist die fesselnde frage der zweiten staffel extant.
